What Side of the Road Does Barbados Drive On?

With its stunning beaches, vibrant culture and relaxed atmosphere, Barbados is a dream destination for many travelers. If you're planning a trip and considering renting a car to explore the island at your own pace, there's one crucial detail to know: Barbados drives on the left side of the road following the British driving system. This can be a major adjustment for visitors from countries like the United States or Canada, where driving on the right is the norm. Seatbelts are also required in Barbados for both drivers and passengers.

A Guide to Driving in Barbados

Rental cars in Barbados will have the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle. This might take some getting used to, especially when making turns or navigating roundabouts. Driving on the left side of the road might require some initial adjustment, but it shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the beautiful scenery. Barbados offers stunning coastal roads and charming villages to explore. Here are some tips for a safe and enjoyable driving experience in Barbados.

  • Take it Slow: Especially during your first few days, take it slow and allow extra time for navigating unfamiliar roads, especially if you’re adjusting to driving on a different side of the road.
  • Be Mindful of Pedestrians & Cyclists: Pay close attention to pedestrians and cyclists, especially at crosswalks and intersections. Drivers in Barbados must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, even if there is no stop sign or traffic light.
  • Honking Culture: In Barbados, honking is used to greet friends and family, thank someone for helping you, ask for directions, express surprise, show appreciation, let others know that you see them, or to indicate that you want to pass another vehicle.

When you are stuck behind another vehicle, flashing your lights indicates that you are willing to give way and wait for the other vehicle to move over. If you are waiting for someone to cross the street, flashing your lights indicates to the person that you are ready to go.

While Barbados follows a general international standard for road signs, it's always a good idea to familiarize yourself with local signage before hitting the road. This can help you avoid confusion and ensure a smooth driving experience. The speed limits in Barbados are posted on road signs and stated in kilometers per hour, not miles per hour. Typically the speed limit in city areas is 40 km/h, in rural areas is 60 km/h, and on major highways is 80 km/h.

Do You Need an International Driver's License in Barbados?

Barbados doesn't require an International Driving Permit (IDP) for tourists with valid driver's licenses from their home countries. While not mandatory, an IDP does act as a translation of your driver's license into 10 different languages, including French and Spanish which can be helpful in case of communication issues with local law enforcement or car rental agencies. Otherwise, your driver's license, accompanied by a passport or other form of identification, is generally sufficient to rent a car and legally drive on the island.

Renting a car allows you to explore the island at your own pace, venturing beyond the typical tourist spots and discovering hidden gems, but before you can rent a car and hit the scenic roads of Barbados, you'll need a Visitor's Driving Permit. Here's how to secure your permit and get ready for your Barbadian adventure.

  • Online Application: This is the preferred and most convenient method. Visit the Barbados Revenue Authority's online portal: https://portal.bra.gov.bb/VisitorPermit and have a scanned copy of your valid driver's license and passport photo ready to upload. Once completed, submit the application and proceed to the online payment portal using your debit or credit card.
  • In-Person Application: While an online application is recommended, you can also apply for your permit in person. Visit any of the following locations: The Barbados Licensing Authority and select Barbados Police Stations. Some car rental companies might also offer assistance with obtaining a Visitor's Driving Permit during the car rental process.

The Visitor's Driving Permit fee depends on the length of your stay. A permit valid for up to two months costs $100 Barbadian Dollars (BBD), while a permit exceeding two months is $200 BBD. Online applications are typically processed within 48 hours while in-person applications might take slightly longer, depending on the location. Especially during peak tourist season, applying for your permit online in advance can save you time and hassle upon arrival in Barbados.

By following these tips and familiarizing yourself with the driving rules, you can navigate the roads of Barbados with confidence and experience the island's beauty at your own pace.
