How Hard is it to Drive in Barbados?

With its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, Barbados is a dream destination for many, and one of the best ways to explore this Caribbean gem is by car. While it might seem very different to drive on the left-hand side of the road, driving in Barbados is generally considered relatively easy. The island is small and has a well-maintained road network. However, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

Navigating the Roads of Barbados

As a former colony of Britain, Barbados drives on the left. If you’re used to driving on the right, this might be a little odd at first, but with some practice you’ll get used to it. The roads are made of lime (as limestone is a plentiful resource on the island) rather than tarmac, so they wear out quickly. However Barbados’ road network is pretty impressive, it covers the entire country, including some remote and hilly parts of the island. While the main highways are well paved, some of the side roads and hills on the east coast can be rough, so you may want to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle if you plan to do a lot of exploring.

In the Caribbean, tourists need a Visitor's Driving Permit alongside their native driver’s license to rent a car, and most rental agencies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. Although cars are imported from all over the world, most cars are right-hand drive and we drive on the left side of the road. All passengers must wear seat belts, and drivers must abstain from using their mobile phones, as it is prohibited by law. You should also adhere to the speed limit, with 60 km/h as the standard limit, and 40 km/h in populated areas.

There are approximately 13 roundabouts on the ABC Highway and it’s important to understand how they work. The outside leftmost lane is used to take the first left exit, and the inside lane is used to take the second and third exits. Bajan drivers are extremely friendly and helpful. If you’re ever stuck in traffic and unsure of what’s going on ahead, you can flag someone in a passing car and ask. People beep to say thank you and sometimes beep back you’re welcome. It’s a very friendly place to drive.
